Welcome to our Academy...

Qualify as a stylist in just six months
25 week hairdressing course for beginners
"Into our third year of success"

Currently no fees, comparable courses charge £8,000.
No previous experience required. We take all age groups.
Segais Academy is a further education facility.
A fast track route to obtain the nationally recognised NVQ level 2 qualification, NVQ level 3 done while working as a stylist, & NVQ level 4 for those who would like to go into management, a fee based 18 month course.
All learners’ who meet the ‘Graduate Stylist Criteria’ will be guaranteed a placement in one of our salons.

With the introduction of our new ‘Multiple Intelligences’ (MI) based programme (now into its 3rd year) we have:

  • Achieved a student retention/pass rate of 80% compared to the national average of 52% [(16-18 yrs) NVQ framework LSC funded work based learning]
  • Brought fun back into learning, producing ‘extended learners’
  • Students can complete course within 6 months to a year (compete in the ‘Instant Age’, work to individual learning style & pace of students)
  • Start practical work from the first week (we all love hands on experience)
  • Start foundation cutting in week 2 (biggest motivation for students wanting to become hairdressers)
  • Completed & repeated theory by 12 weeks into the course
  • Character building, to facilitate transition from school mentality to working adult mentality [development of Emotional Quotient (EQ people skills/communication), this we have found to be the most important aspect of training, as practical work is picked up very quickly]
  • Introduce ‘Life Plan’, give them the tools to make their life a success, being your best, unleashing their unlimited potential
  • Teach & use ‘Mind Maps’ by Tony Buzan
  • 5 day a week full time education based with in a working salon, no use of learners as ‘slave labour’
  • When theory is complete learners start 1 day a week ‘work experience-dual styling’ as a protégé under a mentor (senior stylist) where they interact with the best in a real working salon environment

We feel that with our innovative approach to learning (based on the latest brain research), we are producing happy, committed, creative, & professional stylists with a desire for extended learning taking them on to NVQ level 3 & beyond.

  • We also run a 10 week hairdressing club (14-16yr olds), an introduction to the world of hairdressing, from which the majority of our students are drawn.
  • We put our students’ needs first; work at a pace that suits their individual needs using ‘learning styles’ & ‘Midas’ analysis of their MI for this we use Aspiro, run by Mike Fleetham a national educator . We look for a win/win approach to all tasks.
  • We believe what is rewarded is repeated. During practical based lessons we use the ‘tell, show, do, & praise, praise, praise’ approach. We believe that we learn from our mistakes & do not punish them; it is simply back to ‘tell, show, do etc’.
  • We use a holistic approach to work & believe that all areas of our students’ life need to be touched upon to bring about a whole & balanced person.
  • Our programme incorporates the criteria of NVQ level 2 but most importantly extends beyond its boundary’s to include an in-depth look at where the individual student wants to go with their life, finding meaning & purpose in all that they do. Our job is facilitating their natural desire for learning, guiding them in the development of their skills. This we feel has produced an engaging programme both for the learners & facilitators.

Our training structure

  • Students drawn from hairdressing club/local schools/word of mouth (we have a good working relationship with our local career officer)
  • Parents night to explain structure-goals-expected challenges
  • Course starts in July, giving us & the students 2 months to work out if this is the right programme for them before other colleges’ registration begins in September
  • The course is divided up into 25 weeks
  • We train 5 days a week
  • The week is divided up into segments (mosaic tiles) covering Character Building, EQ development, Life Plan, NVQ theory, Key Skills, NVQ practical/assessments, as many models as they can do, Time Choice management (self managed day to do catch up work, review lessons, project work etc)
  • We get through the theory in the first 7 weeks, which is then repeated (new lessons-same material), to make sure the quality & understanding are there
  • Within the first week we start block work/ shiatsu shampooing
  • Within the second week we start foundation cutting
  • Giving the students as much contact with the practical side of hairdressing as quickly as possible
  • Written papers start in week 4, with appropriate time for redo/catch up
  • Model assessment starts in week 5, with appropriate feedback
  • Criteria set for graduate stylist, a goal to aim for before qualifying, takes learner out onto the floor to start gaining real experience working on the floor under supervision/feedback
  • Lessons follow the MI basics, there are activities for group, pair, & individual parts to all lessons
